Collective Agreement for metalworkers

Demands for national collective bargaining round 2010-2012 approved by consultation of fim & uilm' members

The national Collective Agreement for metalworkers will expire at the end of 2009, a year marked by an extremely serious economic crisis which is involving industry in general and many companies in the engineering field, with significant effects on employment and income. Industrial production decreased by almost one-third in the past 12 months, and therefore the use of “social security cushions” (ordinary and extraordinary unemployment pays, as well as mobility projects) increased. According to most experts, the crisis will still be severe in the next months, and will extend its effects on employment between the end of 2009 and 2010.

Lindsey Oil Refinery

The Commission bears a political responsibility for the Lindsey strikes

The recent social unrest and wildcat strikes at the Lindsey Oil Refinery reveal the fragility of the European social model in the wake of the recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) case-law in the Viking, Laval, Rüffert and Luxembourg cases. Indeed, the Court has clearly suggested substituting the fundamental principle of EU law of equal pay for equal work with an anti-social principle of minimum level of pay for equal work, curbing the right to strike, and exposing trade unions to legal challenges and damages when defending the interests of their members. EMF. 6 March 2009.
